The familiar blue British passport came into use in 1921. The last of these will expire in 2003. 2.1 In September 1988, the UK passport in the EC common format were issued by the Glasgow Passport Office, and the facility to issue them was extended to other offices by the spring of 1991.


When did passport become mandatory to travel?

The UK was the first country to join scheme in 1988; however, a requirement was that the traveller hold a machine-readable passport. Thus, the British government was, after nearly 70 years, forced to retire the traditional navy blue League of Nations format passport. 

 

When did international passports begin?

1901
The Australian Government started issuing passports following Federation in 1901, though the first Federal passport regulations were not introduced until 1912.
