Indian passport policy liberates single parents

Single women can now apply for the passport of children without the consent of father. The first reform came when the ministary rules that it was not necessary to provide the name of both parents in the case of a child's passport.

In case one parent is unable to attend, an authority or consent letter from the absent parent should be presented. The letter should authorize the other parent to apply for the child's passport. An application for change of apperance is required every time the passport is renewed.

If one parent/guardian cannot go with the child to apply for the passport, they can give permission by completing From DS-3053 "Statement of Consent." You must submit the completed from with the child's passport application.
