If you are holding an Indian passport which is about to expire soon or all the pages are filled, you may need to apply for a passport reissue/ renewal. In such cases, you will require a new passport or valid extension. To renew your passport, you have to fill a new passport application form. New passports can be reissued for 10 years for adults. For minors (under 18 Years of age) the passport is given for 5 years. Please note that your old passport will be returned to you. However, if you have any valid visas stamped on the passport they will not be canceled. Therefore you may need to travel both passports in hand to reflect the valid visa as well as the renewed passport.

Note: Passport renewal service is not available for B1/B2 visa holders and temporary visitors to USA.

Important Information about Indian Passport Renewal Process

  • All the Indian Passport services are handled by VFS Global (https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/ind). Individual Indian consulates will no longer accept passport related services directly. All communications and applications associated with Indian passport renewal must be through VFS Global .
  • All applicants for passport related activities have to fill an online Order Form whether applying in person or by mail. The application has to include a copy of the form. This is to enable VFS real-time tracking of the applications.

  1. STEP 1: Identify the consular jurisdiction in which you want to apply for the passport services.
  2. STEP 2: Submit the required documents.
  3. STEP 3: Pay the required Passport Renewal Fee.
What documents do I need to renew my Indian passport?
Documents needed for the Indian Passport Renewal/Re-issue
Online form that you printed out with the Application Reference Number (ARN).
Original expired or expiring passport.
Proof of address as a utility bill: water, telephone, electricity bills, etc.
The utility bill should show statements for at least 2 months

Self-attested copies of the first two and last two pages of the passport.

Can a passport be renewed before it expires?
You can apply for a re-issue of passport up to 1 year before the expiry and not earlier. However, in case of any change of personal particulars, lost/damaged, Exhaustion of pages you may apply for re-issue of passport.
How long is a passport valid after expiration?
If you were age 16 or older when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years. If you were under 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years. The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your passport book or on the front of your passport card.
